Until Dawn: Rush of Blood
WARNING! This is a horror game designed for those 18 years and older. The content of this trailer is gory and meant to terrify!
What was the project?
As the UI/UX Artist on this VR experience, my role focused on designing interfaces that felt naturally integrated into the world rather than layered on top of it.
One of the most exciting challenges was finding the balance between providing clear, intuitive information while preserving the cinematic quality of the experience. In VR, traditional screen-based UI approaches can quickly become distracting, so I explored ways to make the interface feel immersive, contextual, and responsive – such as integrating the HUD into game objects such as the cart you drove around in, rather than having stats floating above the landscape and ruining the fantasy.
I worked on the design and implementation of the UI, considering how elements would appear and behave within the 3D environment, how players would interact with them, and how the interface could support the experience without pulling attention away from the action.
This required a strong focus on spatial design, usability, and player perspective, while working closely with the wider art and development team to ensure the UI translated effectively from concept into the final experience.
It was also very funny sitting in the office with so many of us in helmets testing the game and looking like a Daft Punk tribute act!
My role
- End-to-end ownership: Involved throughout the project lifecycle, from initial UX concepts, interface designs, and sketches through to launch-ready assets and final implementation.
- UX design: Designed intuitive player flows and interactions with a strong focus on usability within an immersive VR environment.
- Immersive UI: Created interfaces that integrated naturally into the experience, providing essential information without disrupting the cinematic presentation.
- UI production: Designed and produced polished, launch-ready UI assets across the experience.
- Engine integration: Integrated and implemented UI directly within the game engine, ensuring designs translated effectively from concept through to the final experience.
- Cross-disciplinary collaboration: Worked closely with designers, developers, and the wider team to refine, implement, and deliver the experience.
