Blocked In!
From dice to combi blocks. A slight change in plans…
Hello again! Sorry for not updating more, I’ll be sure to add more content in future. And, speaking of content, prepare for a BIG post!
First of all, and this is kind of epic, but I have removed the dice in favour of now using ‘combi-blocks’. So, instead of rolling dice and trying to find a match, players use their 6 combi blocks to defeat the cards by matching the pattern on each card.
You wont need to use all of your blocks for every card, naturally – the more complex the pattern, the bigger the reward of either Beard or Booty tokens.
As of now, Beards and Booty is a Pirate-themed, real-time, semi-collaborative card game. The aim of the game is for players to work in two-person teams and use their combo blocks to match the pattern combinations on the cards that they draw. By matching the pattern they ‘defeat’ the card and move it to the discard pile.
Each card has a value in the top right and the player who uses the most blocks to defeat the card wins the Booty and takes the appropriate number of Booty tokens.
However, to earn Beards, players can instead use their skills that are illustrated on their chosen Player Cards. If they use this tactic instead it unlocks the option to use other player skills instead!
The first team to defeat all of the cards from their draw pile – and the boss card underneath – wins, and the player with the most Beards and Booty at the end of the game is declared the Pirate King or Queen!
I’ll do an asset breakdown below so that, hopefully, some of this makes sense!
Combi Blocks
Each player will get six blocks to use to create the combinations needed to defeat a card. The players can easily find their six as each colour has a double that can only be found on one block. Each player should have a double of all six colours.
While this is a big change, I have kept most of the other assets that I had planned to use as the overall game style hasn’t changed:
Player cards
Players first choose their Player Cards. These will be themed to certain areas where Pirates were known to have roamed! So the Caribbean, Africa, China, the West Indies, etc.
The Player Cards also have details about the patterns you can match to help you defeat a certain type of card – such as a Creature or Character card, for example, plus ways that you can boost your team or hinder your opponent!
Beards and Booty tokens
These tokens are there for the taking for the pirate who is fastest to put together the correct combination! In the proper game, they will be cut out a little more carefully than this…
Action cards
While they have needed to be changed to adapt to the new items to display, the cards themselves are pretty much the same. There are three types of Action Card mixed together in the draw pile: Creature, Character and Weather. To defeat them, you and your team need to match the pattern on the card OR use one of your appropriate skills on your Player Card to defeat it and move on to the next…
Mini-bosses and Events
Mixed up in the draw pile are two other card types, Mini-bosses, and Events – just to keep you on your toes! Mini-bosses require you to perform different combinations or teamwork, while Events are more ‘real-world’ related so involve waiting an allotted time before turning over the next card or swapping places or player cards with your teammate!
Boss Card
This is the final card to defeat and will be the most complex pattern of the game. There will be several bosses to choose from and they will range in complexity, with the potential reward balanced against how difficult it is to defeat them!
Hope this all makes sense – looking forward to hearing what you think!
