Game of Thrones UI Styleguide
Immerse yourself in the legendary world of Westeros, gather your allies, fight against rival players and defend the world against the White Walkers.
Company: Bigpoint GmbH. Role: Lead UI/UX Artist
What was the project?
Few IPs are as globally recognizable as Game of Thrones, particularly at its height – which is when the team and I were working on this online representation of the show.
The biggest challenge that I faced as the UI artist was that the game should be instantly recognizable as a GOT adaptation, not a medieval online game. Each screenshot should hold enough hints and nods to the inspiration and have a feel that you are entering the world of Westeros.
The UI had several iterations as the game design adapted to various changes in direction – not uncommon in game development and something I am well experienced in. The UI style guide I created was a milestone within the dev cycle I worked in but not one that I believe was followed to the game’s final release.
It was very exciting to be a part of the story of GOT and will always mean a great deal to me personally, as it was also a time when my family and I moved from the UK to Berlin to join the studio – a time long before remote working became so popular!
My role
- Adapting UI/UX to an evolving brief
- Designing a style guide for colleagues to follow and continue to produce the game
- Take the little UI design available through the TV IP and create a relatable and identifiable style
- Working with a global IP to the restrictions and requirements of the stakeholders
