World of Warships Blitz

World of Warships Blitz is a free-to-play mobile action MMO that plunges you into intense naval combat of the first half of the 20th century.

What was the project?

Taking an existing, popular, and successful title such as this can be a real challenge as you naturally want to make your mark on a game but also it can be useful to already have an existing style to follow. With WOW-Blitz I came on just as the team was working on the UI style 2.0, so this was the perfect time to find the balance between keeping what made the game a success and making positive changes to drive the game forward.

MMO titles on mobile require you to balance several factors – you need to provide an evolving and exciting experience with features and updates to bring in a new player base but all the while make sure you keep your existing players happy by keeping in what they love too! And having an engaged community means you get the… ‘benefit’ of very vocal feedback, especially when you make changes they aren’t too keen on!

What was an added bonus was that, while visiting the floating maritime museum HMS Belfast on a visit to London with my two sons, we found that WOW-Blitz is available to play in their game room. I was considered very cool for a little while that afternoon when they saw a game that ‘Daddy made’.

My role

  • Taking the game forward into a new, yet familiar UI style
  • Working with the team to define, design, and launch new features
  • Supporting teams with promotional content and
  • Setting up and operating usability and A/B testing
  • Following user trends using data-analysis
  • Creating new character profiles to support the overwhelmed art team
